Advantages of LED Grow Lights

As we have already mentioned above, LED lighting offers many key benefits over their traditional counterparts (like HID and Fluorescent). But perhaps one of their greatest advantage lies on their incredibly long lifecycle. This translates to around 11-22 years of continuous lighting, give or take a few years.

Another advantage worth mentioning that comes with LED grow lights is that they emit less heat when compared to other lighting systems. This is indeed very advantageous when it comes to indoor gardening seeing that a lot of heat can be extremely damaging to plants. Also, the fact that they emit less heat means they consume a lesser amount of electricity and are, therefore, less expensive to run or operate. While LED grow lights may be more expensive, you will save more on electricity and bulb-changes over the long run.

Apollo Horticulture 400W LED Grow Light Review: Overview

Apollo Horticulture’s GL80X5LED is a full spectrum grow light meant for large scale farming and indoor gardening. The panel weighs in at 15 pounds and measures about 13.2 inches in length, 13.2 inches in width, and 3.75 inches in height.

Because it is an LED grow light, it produces considerably less heat and consequently does not require ballasts. This means it can placed much closer to plant canopies when compared to regular grow lights.

This 400w LED grow light from Apollo Horticulture is a good choice for most, if not all, hydroponic systems, including grow boxes, greenhouses, and grow tents.

GL80X5LED 400W LED’s Full Spectrum LED Technology

The full spectrum LED technology in the GL80X5LED makes it possible for the panel to release or discharge only the type of color spectrum a plant requires for photosynthesis. The panel can release the blue light spectrum (430~440nm, 450~475nm) when the plant is in the vegetative stage of growth. This particular type of spectrum impersonates or mimics bright sunlight and helps the plant to spread and grow leafy.

The red light spectrum (450~475nm, 620~630nm) is meant to be released during the flowering stage. It encourages stem growth thus enabling the plants to grow taller and flower in anticipation of pollination. The rest of the spectrums are released to accelerate photosynthesis, to trigger vegetative growth, and improve yields as the plants develop.

In general, the GL80X5LED’s full spectrum LED technology promotes the ultimate growth of indoor plants, from the beginning (vegetative stage) to the end (flowering to harvest). For vegetative growth, the unit must be on for at least 12 hours a day. For flowering, 16 hours of lighting daily are necessary. However, different plants have different lighting requirements, so research the time schedule for your particular crop before planting.

GL80X5LED’s 80 x 5w Chips Usage

A lumen is used to measure the brightness of light emitted by a light source. The Apollo Horticulture GL80X5LED Full Spectrum 400W LED grow light uses 80 x 5w chips to produce approximately 10,800 lumens.

The number of lumens needed by plants to thrive depends on a lot of factors, such and the type of plant being grown, how large the growing room is, and the type of yield being expected. Generally, 80 x 5w chips should be able to produce enough lumens to make most plants grow well in terms of both quality and speed.

GL80X5LED’s Energy Saving Capability

To get the most out of indoor plants, an LED grow light needs to be consistently on for at least 12 hours a day, but this depends largely on the type of plant being grown. A huge amount of electricity is, therefore, necessary to keep the plant going.

This, as expected, can turn out to be somewhat expensive when it comes to utility bills.

The GL80X5LED 400W LED grow light consumes approximately 198W (+ – 5%) at 110V and 192W (+ – 5%) at 220V. This may seem too high, but when compared to other LED lights available at this price range, the GL80X5LED’s consumption happens to be relatively low. Moreover, the panel stands out remarkably when it comes to brightness and this eventually paves way for an impressive harvest.

Built-In Fans in the GL80X5LED

The Apollo Horticulture GL80X5LED comes with two 4.5 inch built-in fans which helps to keep the unit cool and to prevent overheating. Not only does this prolong longevity of the light, it also makes it possible for the panel to be placed closer to the plants, which in turn promotes growth.

Small Size for Adaptability

Weighing in at 15 pounds and measuring about 13.2 inches in length, 13.2 inches in width, and 3.75 inches in height, the GL80X5LED 400W LED grow light is relatively small. This makes it the ideal light to use in locations that don’t have much space.
